School: School was difficult for me because I was the first of all the children to go to an Italian school. We were not allowed to go to German school anymore. The Italians wanted to deny and destroy our culture completely. They wanted to prove that we were descendants of the Romans and had always been Italian. But obviously that was not the case at all. Neither my mother nor my father spoke Italian. They had a very hard time. And the school ? an Italian teacher who didn't know the first thing about our customs and traditions. It was very unpleasant... But we got through it. High school was better. I went to the .. was sent to the Loreto Sister's school. They were actually German but had to teach in Italian which they found very difficult. Everybody had to change to Italian. But they were good teachers and taught us very well. It actually was very nice. But they weren't allowed to teach us German. My mother arranged for Miss So-and-so to teach us German in the cellar. She also taught us cursive writing and to write and read German. That way we did learn some. However the German language has always been very difficult for me because I never really learnt it properly.
